The main reason for booking tickets separately is to get the best deals on each ticket before the entire journey becomes available.
The cheapest tickets are usually non-flexible (non-exchangeable & non-refundable) and thus do not allow for changes if your plans change or if the separate legs of your journey do not match up for whatever reason.
